The Wall: Building a Lasting Legacy

Years ago, I built on my father’s idea of turning concrete from demolition sites into stone-style retaining walls. In the mid-1980s, recycling was still gaining momentum across the country as communities looked for better ways to reuse glass, metal, cardboard, paper, and construction materials. By giving discarded concrete a new purpose, we became a small but proud part of that movement, helping reduce the waste stream while creating durable, attractive walls.

The recycled-concrete retaining-wall business took off quickly, and before long we established our company in the Portland area. I grew up working with my dad in the landscape industry, where I learned to build stone walls, pour concrete, and create functional outdoor spaces. That experience shaped the foundation of our work: taking on each project with enthusiasm and earning the satisfaction of bringing a customer’s vision to life.

As the hardscape industry evolved, we expanded our services to give customers more choices. We added retaining-wall block and concrete pavers, along with colored and stamped finishes for poured-concrete patios, stairs, and driveways.

The building of retaining walls can come with all types of challenges. We partner with structural and geotechnical engineers to design the right solution for our projects. We have been on the cutting edge of design and materials; our micro pile driving has been a great solution for difficult hillside retaining walls and structural support footings.

For me, this business is also about family. My son Jake grew up in the business, just as I did, and developed the same passion for building and creating. He is especially drawn to difficult, challenging projects. His skill and enthusiastic approach earned him the opportunity to take over day-to-day operations in 2022, and I could not be prouder to see the business with him at the helm. Jake understands that customers are at the center of everything we do, and he leads our team in helping them turn their project visions into reality.

In 2020, we added landscape design and installation as the perfect complement to our existing services. After graduating from Oregon State University and earning his Oregon Landscape Professional License, my son Max created the landscape division. His leadership allows The Wall to offer customers a more complete outdoor solution, including landscape design and installation, irrigation, and outdoor lighting.

Since our beginning in 1985, our passion has been to create functional outdoor spaces that customers can enjoy now and for generations to come. We will continue that legacy by delivering exceptional craftsmanship and first-rate customer service on every project.
